Walk 2: Farnsfield and Hexgreave

The walk is from Farnsfield to Hexgreave along quiet roads. Returning across fields and along Brickyard Lane to your start point.

Start:  The walk on the map starts from Farnsfield Co-op in the centre of the village.  Since then, however, the Co-op has imposed a one hour limit on parking in the car park and you may prefer to use the car park by the playground on Parfitt Drive a little way from the Ridgeway near the end of the walk.

If using public transport you can get the Sherwood Arrow bus from Nottingham or Worksop.

Distance: 6 km

Map of the Route

From the Co-op entrance turn left along the Main Street crossing Tippings Lane.  Just after the Rustic Crust pizzeria cross the Main Street and turn up New Hill.  Go past the village centre and library.  At the top of the hill continue straight on over two crossroads, passing the tennis club.  600m from the Main Street the road descends and you leave the village.  Climb out of a dip where the old railway line crossed and then go down to automatic gates across the road.  Go through a smaller gate to the right to enter the Hexgreave Estate.

Keep going straight on along the road, which has very little traffic, for 600m to a junction.  Turn right and go up a small rise then after 200m reach another junction.  Turn left along a nice avenue of lime trees before the road climbs to reach the buildings which are the main part of the Hexgreave estate.  These are business units on either side of the road.  Stay on the road past them and start to descend among more trees but before you have gone far look for a yellow post on the verge to the right.  This indicates a footpath and you should turn right here to go under the trees.  A short distance away is a tall gate in a fence.  Go through it into a very large area of parkland with deer in it.  The path can be on either side of the high fence running ahead of you across the park so that you are kept away from the deer.  The grass is usually quite short and nice to walk on although after rain you can find it has retained patches of standing water.

Cross the park next to the fence going slightly downhill for 500m.  Leave by another gate to enter a pasture which often has cows in it and can be a bit awkward to walk on because they have made hoof prints.  Go straight across for 80m and leave over a stile by a sometimes muddy patch.   Go through a short field with low trees to arrive at a junction of farm roads near some stables and a farm.  Go almost straight on for a short way on the road then bear slightly left to take you to the edge of a very large arable field.

There is usually a clear path across the field but if not you should initially aim for the nearest pylon and then towards a single tree almost straight on another 400m away.  From there keep straight on for 100m to the end of the field where a gap in the hedge takes you onto the old railway track.

Go straight across the track and through a gap opposite by a bench.  This takes you onto a wide grassy track.  Turn right and follow this track for a kilometre all the way into Farnsfield.  The first little section can be a bit muddy but after that the track becomes firmer.  Before long the track becomes Brickyard Lane, a well-surfaced road, which comes out near the bottom of The Ridgeway where it meets the Main Street.  Cross The Ridgeway and go onto Main Street.  Turn right to go past The Plough pub and continue along for 250m to reach the Co-op again when you cross the street where the walk started.
