Walk 1 - Short Walk South From Farnsfield via The Acres

A circular walk from Farnsfield co-op along the Main Street to Parfitt Drive. Across the Acres and through the wood to the Halifax Bomber Memorial. Back to Farnsfield across field and along Beck Lane and Tippings Lane.

Start:  The walk on the map starts from Farnsfield Co-op in the centre of the village.  Since then, however, the Co-op has imposed a one hour limit on parking in the car park and you may prefer to use the car park by the playground on Parfitt Drive a little way into the walk.

If using public transport you can get the Sherwood Arrow bus from Nottingham, Worksop and Retford or the 28 bus between Mansfield and Newark.

The Arrow stops at the Green near The Lion pub and church, and the 28 bus stops at the Green, the Plough pub and Parfitt Drive.

Distance: 3.6 km

Map of the Route

From the Co-op car park on Tippings Lane walk to the junction with Main Street near the Co-op shop entrance.

Turn right and walk along Main Street for 600m, on the way crossing Quaker Lane, passing the Plough pub and the Woodberry Teahouse Café & Shop.

Turn right along Parfitt Drive and almost immediately leave the road to go onto the grass past a car park and small playground.

Go straight on across the playing field area for 200m and go just to the side of a metal gate.

The next field is next to the village allotments.  Bear right across the field for 50m to a gap by a wooden fence.

This takes you onto a wide track where you go left onto the Acres playing field.  Go straight on for 150m to the far end between a football pitch and a brick building, the changing rooms.

Go into a plantation of deciduous trees and follow the main track almost straight on for 300m.

Emerge at the bottom of an arable field and follow the path straight on uphill.  At the top of this path, which can be muddy, there is a bench.

Just after the bench you reach a track which goes downhill to the right.  Turn along this track, which is a bit churned up in places recently, and follow it for 500m.

It meets a surfaced road where, if you turn left towards Riddings Farm you pass a pond and come to the Halifax Bomber Memorial, commemorating a bomber which crashed here in 1944.

Returning to the end of the track continue on along the road, which is only the access road to the farm and has hardly any traffic.

After 150m at a junction with another road, Combs Lane, turn right and after 150m near a bench, turn left along a footpath.

The path is at first between hedges but then crosses an arable field for 50m.

Go right at the far side of the field.  Follow the grassy path between fields of sheep and horses, straight on towards the church.

After 300m go onto Beck Lane, watching for traffic as you do so.

Turn right for 200m then at a junction turn left and follow this road (Tippings Lane) for 300m to return to your starting point.
