Walk 4: Farnsfield and Combs Wood

A circular walk from Farnsfield across fields to Greaves Lane returning through Combs Wood and along farm tracks, including a couple of hills.

Start: Farnsfield Co-op

Start:  The walk on the map starts from Farnsfield Co-op in the centre of the village.  Since then, however, the Co-op has imposed a one hour limit on parking in the car park and you may prefer to use the car park by the playground on Parfitt Drive a little way into the walk.

If using public transport you can get the Sherwood Arrow bus from Nottingham, Worksop and Retford or the 28 bus between Mansfield and Newark.

The Arrow stops at the Green near The Lion pub and church, and the 28 bus stops at the Green, the Plough pub and Parfitt Drive.

Distance 6 km

Map of the Route

From the Co-op car park on Tippings Lane walk to the junction with Main Street near the Co-op shop entrance.

Turn right and walk along Main Street for 600m, on the way crossing Quaker Lane, passing the Plough pub and the Woodberry Teahouse Café & Shop.

Turn right along Parfitt Drive and almost immediately leave the road to go onto the grass past a car park and small playground.

Go straight on across the playing field area for 200m and go just to the side of a metal gate.

The next field is next to the village allotments.  Bear right across the field for 50m to a gap by a wooden fence.

This takes you onto a wide track where you go left onto the Acres playing field.  Go straight on for 150m to the far end between a football pitch and a brick building, the changing rooms.

Go into a plantation of deciduous trees and follow the main track almost straight on for 300m.

Emerge at the bottom of an arable field and follow the path straight on uphill.  At the top of this path, which can be muddy, there is a bench.

Just after the bench you reach a track which goes downhill to the right which was taken on Walk 1 but this time carry straight on alongside a hedge and trees by a field.

At the end of the hedge keep straight on downhill across the field.  At the bottom carry straight on but move slightly to the right at the gap so that you are climbing steeply uphill at the edge of another field with a hedge and trees just to your left.

At the top go through a gap in the fence and turn right for a short distance before following the hedge to turn left for 10m and reach the highest point of the hill.  There are good views to north and south.

Continue downhill by the hedge quite steeply to the bottom where you go right through a wide gap in the hedge and go on to the edge of a stream.  Turn right for 50m by the stream then cross it on a farm track and go on up to a gate.

You can go round the gate by going to the right where there is a gap by a stile.  Go onto a  quiet road, Greaves Lane, and turn right.

After 400m near a house look to the right of the road for a metal gate.  Go through this into Combs Wood and follow the track uphill for 600m.  At a junction of paths keep straight on past concrete blocks near a clearing.  The path has become a little messy here but follow it and as you descend into trees again it improves.  Ignore the side path half way down and continue until the path narrows.  After rain the path here gets muddy.  Go down some, partially hidden by mud, steps and come out of the wood.

There are good views to the west and to Farnsfield with a bench also nearby.  There are more concrete blocks here.  Go straight on downhill to reach Combs Lane farm road.  Turn right and follow the lane for 1200m, ignoring all side turns, unless you want to follow the route at the end of Walk 1.

At the end of Combs Lane you descend to Farnsfield and  at the road junction you reach bear left.  After 150m you reach the junction with Beck Lane on the left.  Carry straight on up Tippings Lane for 300m to return to the Co-op.
